Spotlight: Clingman’s Dome / Kuwohi

Greetings from the Peaceful Side!

As we transition into many people’s favorite time of the year with the leaves changing and air getting crisper, it makes for a great time to experience one of the most scenic vistas the Smokies has to offer. Standing at 6,643 Ft. (2,025 M), Kuwohi, is the highest peak of Tennessee, the Great Smoky Mountain National Park, and the Appalachian Trail! This 1-mile roundtrip trek to the observation tower located at the summit is paved and offers benches for resting. While the hike itself is not very long, walking at that altitude uphill can leave visitors fatigued, so be sure to take water and rest when needed.

Trail Stats:

Intensity: ⛺ / 5

Duration: 1-mile roundtrip

Trailhead Location: The trail starts from the Kuwohi parking lot where there is a small visitors center and restrooms.

Fun Facts:

  • The name “Clingman’s Dome” comes from the NC senator who surveyed the mountain over 150 years ago. However, the name has recently been changed back to “Kuwohi”, a Cherokee word meaning “mulberry place”.
  • The Observation tower at the peak offers a full 360-degree panoramic view. On clear days you can see over 100 miles and 7 states (TN, VA, GA, NC, SC, KY, AL).
  • Anyone looking for a longer walk around the peak can find Andrews Bald trail also begins from the Forney Ridge Trailhead. This 3.5-mile roundtrip hike will lead you out to the highest elevation bald in The Smokies that also provides breathtaking views!
  • This trail also happens to share a name with one of our villas here on property!

How to get there:

From The Dancing Bean turn right onto US-321 N for 3 miles, then, turn left at the light and travel up Wears Valley Road for 6 miles. Take a right onto Line Springs Road which will turn into Little River Gorge Road and follow it until you reach the Sugarlands visitor center. Drive 13.4 miles on Newfound Gap Road from the Sugarlands visitor center, then, turn right and follow the 7-mile-long road to the parking lot at the top of the mountain. Parking is limited so it is advised to travel up early, carpool, and have an alternate destination in mind when visiting here due to its high popularity.

As always when exploring, be safe, stay hydrated, & have fun!

Happy Trails, Friends!
