Fishing FAQ – River Cabins at Dancing Bear Lodge
(Little River 1, Little River 2 & The River House)
Can I fish right behind the cabin?
You can, but water levels fluctuate throughout the year, making fishing conditions unpredictable directly behind the cabins.
Where’s the best fishing spot?
The bridge about 50 yards upstream from Little River 1 is a reliable year-round spot with deeper pools and steady flow — even during high water.
Is the river stocked with trout?
Yes! TWRA stocks trout at the bridge just above LR1.
- Best stocking: March–June (every 2 weeks)
- Also stocked: Jan, Feb, Oct, Nov (monthly)
- Not stocked: July–September
When are water levels highest or lowest?
- High: Spring (March–May), after rain
- Low: Summer (June–August), clear and shallow
- Ideal: Fall (Sept–Nov), cool and stable
- Variable: Winter (Dec–Feb), cold but less crowded
Do I need a license?
Yes — a Tennessee fishing license with trout permit is required.
Get one online at tn.gov/twra/fishing or locally at Little River Outfitters in Townsend.
Can I keep what I catch?
TWRA regulations apply. Catch-and-release is encouraged to help maintain the fishery.
