Greetings from the Peaceful Side of the Smokies!
Summer is upon us, and it’s prime time to get outdoors and explore. For our very first trail feature of the series, we’re spotlighting Ace Gap. We’ll break down what you need to know and invite you to hike along with us as we traverse the park. Ace Gap is a straightforward trail where you can turn around and head back the same way you came once you reach the Beard Cane Trail.
As always, when exploring, be safe, stay hydrated, and have fun! Be prepared for sunburns and mosquito bites; if you forget your rain jacket or can’t find your sunscreen, our Smoky Mountain Outdoor Center here on the property has everything you need.

Ace Gap Fun Facts
- This local site is the namesake of one of the new cottages we opened last year.
- Legend has it that Ace Gap was named for the card games played by lumber workers who once used the area.
- On the way, you’ll pass Bull Cave, the deepest in the state, which requires special permits to enter.
- At one point on the trail, you’ll find remnants of an old railway once part of the Little River Railroad, used by the Little River Lumber Company owned by W.B. Townsend, after whom our town of Townsend was named.
How to Get to Ace Gap Trail
Starting from the Dancing Bean, take a right onto U.S. 321. Continue down the road until you reach a fork, then take a right. Follow the signs to Cades Cove Loop. Once on the Loop, the Rich Mountain Road turnoff will be past the Methodist Church, a little over a quarter of the way into the drive. The trail parking lot will be off Rich Mountain Road. Please note that Rich Mountain Road is notoriously bumpy, so drive carefully.
Happy Trails, Friends!
